We are delighted to share that The Handbook of Critical Studies of Artificial Intelligence and Education, edited by Wayne Holmes, UNESCO Chair on Ethics of AI and Education at the International Research Centre on Artificial Intelligence (IRCAI) under the auspices of UNESCO, has been published by Edward Elgar Publishing.
The Handbook brings together the work of 66 researchers from 18 countries across all five continents, offering one of the first comprehensive explorations of the emerging field of Critical Studies of Artificial Intelligence and Education (CSAI&ED).
While handbooks traditionally provide overviews of established academic disciplines, this publication takes a different approach. Recognising that Critical Studies of AI and Education is still an emerging field, the Handbook seeks to initiate and strengthen an important global conversation on the role of AI in education.
The volume is organised into five thematic sections:
- Critical perspectives on AI and education
- Educational frameworks and AI literacy
- Sociocultural and ethical implications of AI in education
- Practical applications and case studies of AI in education
- Policy and governance of AI in education
As Professor Holmes notes, although the contributors largely agree on the key questions facing AI and education, they do not necessarily agree on the answers. This diversity of perspectives reflects the vitality of a rapidly evolving research field and invites readers to engage critically with its many challenges and opportunities.
Congratulations to Wayne Holmes and all contributing authors on this significant publication, which represents an important milestone in advancing critical thinking about the future of AI and education.
