Another special issue of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development (JAISD) was published, titled: “AI, Democracy, and the Public Interest: Building Resilient Digital Futures.” This special issue explores how artificial intelligence can be designed, governed, and deployed in ways that strengthen democratic values, institutional trust, transparency, accountability, and citizen participation. Bringing together interdisciplinary perspectives from computer science, public policy, law, ethics, media studies, and the social sciences, the publication examines both the opportunities and challenges associated with integrating AI into public governance, civic infrastructures, and public-interest services.

The special issue was edited by Tanja Zdolšek Draksler (IRCAI, Jožef Stefan Institute and University of Maribor, Slovenia), George Manias (University of Piraeus, Greece, and Tilburg University, The Netherlands), and Achim Rettinger (Trier University, Germany).

Full special issue is openly available online and features 9 peer reviewed and selected contributions, that address topics such as trustworthy AI, democratic governance, AI literacy, bias mitigation, public-sector AI deployment, citizen participation, accountability, public-interest technologies, and regulatory approaches to AI.

The contributions highlight the importance of ensuring that technological innovation remains aligned with democratic principles, human rights, and societal well-being, while supporting resilient and inclusive digital futures.

We also invite readers to explore the JAISD website, where several open calls for upcoming special issues are currently available. Researchers working on artificial intelligence, sustainable development, digital transformation, governance, ethics, education, and related interdisciplinary topics are warmly encouraged to submit their work.

If you are currently preparing an interesting manuscript or have an idea for a future contribution, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please feel free to contact the editorial team at  info@ircai.org to discuss potential submissions or collaboration opportunities.
