The Journal of Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development (JAISD), IRCAI’s open-access scientific journal dedicated to advancing knowledge on responsible use of AI for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has announced, in partnership with UNESCO, a Call for Papers for a forthcoming Special Issue on Artificial Intelligence in the Justice Sector, to be published in February 2026.

The timely issue will explore how AI is transforming legal systems, justice institutions, and the daily work of legal professionals. It will provide a critical perspective on the opportunities and challenges of deploying AI in areas such as judicial efficiency, procedural fairness, access to justice, and the ethical governance of legal technologies.

For researchers, practitioners, and policymakers working at the intersection of law, technology, and ethics, this special issue offers a unique opportunity to help shape the global conversation on justice and AI.

Themes

The editorial board, composed of distinguished legal and AI experts: Catherine Régis, Jake Okechukwu Effoduh and Cristina Godoy Bernardo de Oliveira, welcomes interdisciplinary and practice-based submissions from scholars, legal practitioners, technologists, and policymakers globally. Topics of interest include:

  • Access to justice and procedural fairness
  • Judicial efficiency and independence
  • Case studies of AI implementation in courts and tribunals
  • Ethical governance and accountability frameworks
  • Collaborative models between AI developers and legal professionals

Key dates

  • Abstract submissions deadline: September 15, 2025
  • Full manuscripts deadline: November 30, 2025
  • Publication date: February 2026

Submissions can be made through the JAISD submission system. For more information, visit the Call for Papers.

This special issue follows the successful publication of JAISD’s first issue, AI and Education for Democracy (Vol. 1, No. 1), released in March 2024, which examined how AI can strengthen democratic values through education, cultural preservation, and ethical system design.

JAISD is published in partnership between the Research Centre on Artificial Intelligence under the auspices of UNESCO (IRCAI) and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS).
