In November 2021, the Slovenian Presidency hosted DigiEduHack, an EIT initiative organized in the frame of the European Commission’s Digital Education Action Plan, led by the EIT Climate-KIC and coordinated by Aalto University. The main stage event was hosted by the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU in cooperation with the International Center for Artificial Intelligence under the auspices of UNESCO (IRCAI).
The Digital Education Hackathon (DigiEduHack) 2021 was centered on solutions striving to address the UN Sustainable Development Goals. A total of 53 challenges took place, with as many as 2,227 participants from 38 countries taking part.
In addition to organizing the main event, Slovenia also registered to participate in the hackathon itself: A challenge was hosted as part of the Green Hack hackathon, initiated by the Ministry of Public Administration, the City Municipality of Ljubljana, Technology Park Ljubljana and IRCAI. A wide range of content and technology partners also joined the effort.
The challenge, developed as part of DigiEduHack, addressed the challenges of sustainable development and digital education by gathering a broad set of data related to beekeeping and educational resources that are openly available online.
We are pleased to announce that, last week, Commissioner Mariya Gabriel officially announced the three winners of the DigiEduHack Global Award 2021. One of the winners is BeeSmart, a Slovenian solution. The remaining two solutions that received the highest amount of public votes, for the original and innovative solutions they provide, are ‘Hachi’ and ‘GoGreen’.
Following a public vote on the platform Unite Ideas, three solutions were declared the winners of the DigiEduHack 2021 Global Award. Each team will be awarded with €5000. Furthermore, the winning team members have been nominated for DigiEduHack Global Ambassadors.
The Beesmart application was created by a two-member team, consisting of Franc Klavž and Urška Šmajs. This short video contains a presentation of the solution: https://twitter.com/i/status/1503327676194508801.
Beesmart’s interactive app, addressed at beekeepers all across the globe, aims at providing sufficient care to bees. It has received 377 votes. More information about this solution is available at: https://digieduhack.com/en/solutions/beesmart.
What is next?
The awarding ceremony for DigiEduHack 2021 will take place online on 9.6.22, marking the continuation of their journey for the three selected teams. The awarding ceremony will be presided by Themis Christophidou, Director-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture of the European Commission and will be opened by Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth.
