IRCAI has contributed to the newly published Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) InnoLab7 White Paper Collection, “The Role of Universities in Advancing AI for Good.”
The collection brings together nine collaborative white papers developed by experts from Asia and Europe, examining how universities can contribute to the responsible development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) for societal benefit.
IRCAI contributed to Paper 7, “Co-Creating SDG-Informed Open Education with Trusted AI Across the Asia-Europe Axis,” which explores how trusted artificial intelligence can strengthen open education, support the creation of multilingual Open Educational Resources (OER), and make knowledge related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) more accessible worldwide.
Advancing Open Education Through Trusted AI
The paper examines the potential of AI to transform open education by fostering more inclusive, accessible, and collaborative knowledge ecosystems across Asia and Europe.
It highlights the importance of integrating three interconnected dimensions:
- Open Education as Infrastructure: Building accessible, inclusive, and collaborative educational ecosystems that enable knowledge sharing across institutions, countries, and communities.
- Trusted AI as an Enabler: Harnessing responsible, human-centred, and trustworthy AI to support the creation, adaptation, and dissemination of educational resources, including multilingual OER.
- SDGs as a Framework for Societal Impact: Aligning AI-driven educational innovation with the Sustainable Development Goals to ensure that technological progress contributes to meaningful and sustainable societal benefits.
By bringing these dimensions together, the paper highlights opportunities for universities and educational institutions to collaborate in developing AI-supported approaches to open education that respond to diverse learning needs and global sustainability challenges.
International Collaboration Across Asia and Europe
Paper 7 was jointly authored by João Pita Costa, Anja Polajnar, Davor Orlič, Ebba Ossiannilsson, Joost Groot Kormelink, Ajita Deshmukh, Chetanpal Singh, and Weiyao Meng.
The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to advancing open education, responsible AI, and international knowledge exchange.
Through its contribution, IRCAI continues to support initiatives that connect artificial intelligence research with education, sustainability, and societal impact, while strengthening cooperation between institutions and experts across Asia and Europe.
The Role of Universities in Advancing AI for Good
The ASEF InnoLab7 White Paper Collection addresses a central question: How can universities help shape artificial intelligence for the common good?
Bringing together diverse perspectives from higher education, research, and innovation, the nine papers explore the opportunities and responsibilities of universities in ensuring that AI development is inclusive, ethical, sustainable, and aligned with societal needs.
The collection encourages universities to move beyond the adoption of AI technologies and take an active role in shaping responsible AI practices, strengthening international partnerships, and developing concrete initiatives that benefit society.
