Can humans and AI collaborate effectively in ever-changing, unstructured environments? This fundamental question lies at the heart of the HumAIne project, which aims to enhance the role of AI in decision-making across various sectors.

HumAIne (Hybrid AI Decision Support for Empowering People in Dynamic Situations), funded by the Horizon Europe programme, seeks to develop an operating system that enables seamless collaboration between humans and AI. The goal is to create a platform for advanced decision-making applications across multiple industries.

This joint initiative involves 17 partners from 12 countries, including five EU universities, research institutions, and 12 companies. The consortium is led by GFT ITALIA SRL, with notable partners like the Jožef Stefan Institute and Qlector from Slovenia.

The project will deliver a HumAIne platform that integrates four key components:

  • Active Learning (AL)
  • Neurosymbolic Learning (NL)
  • Swarm Learning (SL)
  • Explainable AI (XAI)

These cutting-edge approaches place the human operator at the centre, offering full control, transparency, and understanding of operations, ensuring a seamless collaboration between humans and AI.

The platform will be tested and validated across five pilot sectors: Smart Manufacturing, Smart Cities, Smart Energy Grids, Smart Finance, and Smart Healthcare. HumAIne will also include a training programme and build a vibrant community of stakeholders to promote the widespread adoption and application of the project’s results.

IRCAI, operating under the auspices of UNESCO, is a proud partner in this ambitious project, working closely with the AI Lab (Unit E3) at the Jožef Stefan Institute. Our role involves contributing to the development of the training activities and outreach of the HumAIne project and its results. The AI Lab is developing ontologies for data mining in active learning, enabling the creation of semantic models that provide a common language for humans and IT systems. Additionally, the AI Lab is leading the development of a prototype active learning system that will serve as the foundation for future modules on active learning in production environments.

Last week, we hosted the HumAIne General Assembly in Ljubljana, Slovenia, where project partners gathered to discuss the project’s progress and planned the next steps in this exciting initiative. For more information, visit the HumanE AI Network.
