General description of the AI solution

In today's K-12 educational landscape, one of the key objectives is the support of individualized education regardless of class size, for a wider and more diverse range of student learning needs.

To address this critical need for change, we introduced Knowledge Artificial Intelligence Technology (KAIT). KAIT has a unique and truly cross-platform (computer, mobile, tablet, and regular pen and paper) system that builds on proven educational practices in the classroom to deliver individualized learning for each student so they can improve their academic performance more efficiently. KAIT’s digital smart pens collect biometric and behavioral writing data from paper-based assessments or tailored online exercises to assess their overall areas of strength and weakness.

Teachers can easily access a digital reproduction of students’ handwritten work, perform auto-grading of assignments, review class and student level performance analytics using Cognitive and Behavioral Metrics, and see which topics and subtopics are needed for class review.

KAIT’s AI engine is designed to aggregate a students’ performance data to generate precision practice exercises for each student in the class. Our concept is to provide appropriate training (Zone of Proximal Development) to those students who require more time before moving onto the next topic. This is not possible in our standard classroom structure as teachers have a specific time set for the coverage of topics. Hence, we are introducing a solution that ensures no child is left behind with an automated self-learning platform. Our AI individualizes learning by incrementally strengthening students’ mastery of concepts by targeting their persistent knowledge gaps on the most recent and previously administered assessments.

KAIT solutions can be used in any type of learning environment: in school, at home, hybrid (combination), and even in “off-line” mode to serve students with no access to computers or the internet, all while providing access to the same materials and tools. Having one solution that is able to gather intelligent biometric data and leverage AI to support students in any environment is an essential tool to support teaching and learning especially in the highly uncertain learning environment of today.

3. Aspects

Excellence and Scientific Quality: Please detail the improvements made by the nominee or the nominees’ team or yourself if your applying for the award, and why they have been a success.

KAIT’s patent-pending biometric AI solution solves one of the most difficult questions in applying AI in traditional classroom settings: lack of digital data. Our parent company, Anoto, is the pioneer in the smart pen technology for digitally capturing work. In fact, our digital pen is used by an MIT funded company to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease and won US FDA approval. We leverage the use of that pen to untether AI educational support from computer-based input. This provides significant opportunities for increased data to inform AI engines, as well as access to AI-driven support for schools that are not 1:1 with technology.

Our System utilizes the following AI elements:

Cognitive and Behavioral Metrics (CBM) – KAIT’s CBMs measure four cognitive metrics: Number Sense, Reasoning, Memory Visualization, Apply Connections, and four behavioral metrics: Test Taking Skill, Grit, Concentration, Question Comprehension. Of these, Grit is launched, Test Taking Skill is pre-release, and Reasoning and Memory Visualization are in development.

Identity Verification (Anti-Cheating)— KAIT’s pen captures handwriting and digitizes it. Once digitized, we use AI to analyze and verify the work to authenticate its author.

KAIT Neural AI Engine – KAIT’s Neural AI Engine is the system driving individualized assignments based on student performance. Using gathered biometric pen data and CBM outcomes, the AI engine generates targeted assignments for each student to work on exactly what they need to build mastery.

Test Prep AI Tutor—KAIT’s Subject Recommendation Engine based on KAIT’s Neural AI prepares individuals to take standardized tests like the SAT, ACT, or GRE by leading users through a series of individualized research-based training cycles. As users answer questions, their experience adapts, and targeted questions are recommended for the areas in which they have the lowest performance. This element is in final stages of development and will roll out later this year.

Scaling of impact to SDGs: Please detail how many citizens/communities and/or researchers/businesses this has had or can have a positive impact on, including particular groups where applicable and to what extent.

Our KAIT system has deployed in eight countries so far: United States, Chile, Jordan, Korea, Kuwait, Singapore, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. In the immediate future, Knowledge AI signed a two-year distribution agreement worth a minimum sales target of USD $6 million in Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates. Our measurable progress goals relate to improvements in academic achievement over the completion of assessments created and administered by teachers. KAIT currently offers options for satisfaction surveys and a feature feedback mechanism built into the system.

Additionally, KAIT maintains a connected non-profit foundation that provides quality education opportunities and materials globally in areas where modern teaching methods and advanced education technology are not as readily available. At this point, the KAIT Foundation is working with the MIT Beaver Works program to train students on engineering and AI programming. We launched our inaugural non-profit program in Korea with Korean government agencies and Seoul National University.

Scaling of AI solution: Please detail what proof of concept or implementations can you show now in terms of its efficacy and how the solution can be scaled to provide a global impact ad how realistic that scaling is.

Our system is designed to improve the quality of teaching. The world is facing severe teacher shortages and the quality of education is dismal (UNESCO estimates 50% of students globally are failing). Despite the COVID pandemic and school closures, we already have customers in 10 countries. Our system is designed to handle multi-language capabilities including, English, Korean and Arabic. We will soon be adding Spanish and Chinese.

In response to the new development of remote learning needs, we also have a hybrid learning platform where teachers can view students’ writing and have the ability to administer online assessments.

In terms of GDPR and privacy issues, we do not maintain student records on our cloud. Most of the privacy data is stored in the school’s LMS or SIS. However, we also enable quality teaching in less developed environments where students do not have access to the internet. Students can use our pen for problem solving and the pen can store their data. When they bring the pen to school, teachers can upload the data using a cradle system and be able to access our comprehensive diagnostics and student analysis. We built this system in order to help rural areas and for the less developed countries where internet access is not available except in certain areas.

Ethical aspect: Please detail the way the solution addresses any of the main ethical aspects, including trustworthiness, bias, gender issues, etc.

Our main tenet is to improve education efficiency. The product has two purposes: to help teachers teach better and to help students to learn more easily. By doing this, we hope to democratize education. We would like to make education less dependent on families’ income levels and access to resources.

KAIT Solutions products, KAIT@SCHOOL for at school in-person use, and KAIT@HOME for remote online learning, are equipped to address a range of disparate resource and social conditions across geographic areas. In areas in which students do not have stable and equal access to internet connectivity at home, KAIT offers off-line pen and paper options which allow students to complete assignments created with the system without any requirements for access to technology or internet at home.

Any student, regardless of gender or socioeconomic status, can have access to KAIT Solutions products through their school or from home and all of our products offer the same features of data analysis and individualized learning recommendations supported by our Neural AI Engine. All students who use KAIT Solutions products have the same opportunities through our system to improve their academic outcomes.
