General description of the AI solution
X5GON is a project that applies different AI techniques supported by a technology stack allowing the AI technologies to support sustainable education to scale. The system that incorporates the different AI technologies discovers 100,000s of Open Educational Resources (OERs) scattered around the world (on the Internet) and enriches them with meaningful and detailed metadata that can be used to enhance their discoverability and utility to human learners. The technology stack consists of i) an ingestion pipeline, that uses AI to harvest and enrich metadata about new OERs, ii) an Application Programming Interface (API), that facilitates the communication of external software systems with X5GON and iii) X5Learn, an intelligent learning platform that personalises learning pathways and allows humans to consume OERs harvested from a multitude of repositories directly.
The X5GON technology stack directly addresses SDG4 treading toward equitable, quality education. At the same time, it also passively impacts other SDGs such as poverty eradication, good health and well-being, sustainable cities, decent work, climate change etc. by making available high-quality informational content across languages and modalities. AI technologies such as transcription, translation, scalable, automatic quality assessment, search and recommendation are used to connect individual learners to learning materials. Currently, learners are the key user group that can benefit from X5GON and X5Learn systems. But we have also identified that X5GON can become a powerful tool that teachers can use to discover high-quality, openly licenced learning materials that they can use in their teaching. Furthermore, we also see how the wealth of knowledge accumulated by X5GON can help employers and commercial entities to support upskilling and career development of employees. Going to the future, we aim to work with governments, social good organisations and commercial partners to leverage AI to democratise education.
