General description of the AI solution
Amy is an AI-based private tutor for math that makes learning math easy for everyone. She does this by giving students feedback and automatically filling their knowledge gaps as they learn.
Dynamic teaching, as we call this, is a paradigm shift on the current model of adaptive learning because it is able to pinpoint gaps in knowledge and seamlessly move between topics to address them.
Our mission is to democratise education and ensure that everyone with a basic internet connection can receive a high quality education. To do this we made Amy so it is easy to integrate her into all online learning systems and make her teach in any language.
We are shifting the world from the one size fits none model of education to the age of completely individualised learning.

3. Aspects
Excellence and Scientific Quality: Please detail the improvements made by the nominee or the nominees’ team or yourself if your applying for the award, and why they have been a success.
We have created our own custom AI which was designed to understand mathematics in both a fundamental and pedagogically useful way. This sits at the core of our system and allows us to understand maths and helps us to create the smart content which our tutor uses to teach. We needed to create our own unique AI so we could ensure that we had a system which was useful and able to teach from the first student and creates its own unbiased dataset which it can draw on to enhance and optimise itself without any risk of introducing human bias from existing datasets.
One of the academics who has been supporting us and our project over the past few years has told us that we have created a system which is unique in its capabilities which in his opinion reaches far beyond our initial application of helping us to understand and teach maths.
We have also created a novel approach in terms of how we deal with languages. We understand that we need to make it really easy to teach in many languages so we created a new generative approach in terms of how we do this. We have a very small dataset of phrases and words which we translate and then teach Amy the ‘grammar’ of a new language instead of taking everything our she needs and translating it. This makes the process much faster, simpler, cheaper and thus more scalable.
Scaling of impact to SDGs: Please detail how many citizens/communities and/or researchers/businesses this has had or can have a positive impact on, including particular groups where applicable and to what extent.
We are on a mission to democratise education globally and want to impact the 1 Billion + children who need to learn each day. Our ambitions are global and we want to ensure we are supporting everyone who needs help to learn maths whether this is a student living in a wealthy developed city or someone who lives in a remote underdeveloped part of the world. All they need is a simple device, a basic internet connection and an interest to learn.
We work closely with teachers who provide us with feedback on the product and its impact on engagement with students. We are already being used by students in a number of countries and plan to launch into more regions soon. This will allow us to increase our impact and ensure that we can reach larger audiences. We will also undertake further studies to look at the applicability and impact of this on the students who use Amy.
We make it easy for organisations and companies to use Amy and integrate her into their existing systems or build new ones on top of our core system. We hope that this will create a whole ecosystem of products which will help us to scale our growth and global impact.
Scaling of AI solution: Please detail what proof of concept or implementations can you show now in terms of its efficacy and how the solution can be scaled to provide a global impact ad how realistic that scaling is.
We have worked closely with teachers, academics and companies to ensure that we are creating a solution which meets everyone's needs and is designed to maximise learning impact. We have had incredibly enthusiastic and positive feedback from the teachers and parents of the students who have used our platform. We intend to supplement this with independent peer reviewed academic research on the long term efficacy and improvements to learning over the coming year.
Our system is built on scalable, globally distributed infrastructure so it is built to scale. We use a partnership model and allow organisations and companies to integrate our AI technology into their own systems and build on what we have created to power and enhance their own products. We hope that this will enable a whole new generation of high tech solutions which are customised and localised for specific community needs.
Our system is fully GDPR compliant and meets the privacy needs of organisations in all of the countries we operate in. We work with a number of companies and academic institutions and intend to grow this over the coming year.
Ethical aspect: Please detail the way the solution addresses any of the main ethical aspects, including trustworthiness, bias, gender issues, etc.
We are ensuring that we do no introduce any biases into our system by building a system which creates its own data set to learn from so we can ensure that we remove the risk of introducing human biases in the data or how it was collected. Our team is gender balanced, ethnically diverse and comes from 14 countries to reduce the risk of creating something which has cultural, gender or geographical biases built in.
We provide our solution to end users through partner companies and organisations so we can use their local understanding to ensure that we can reach those that need it.
Our system is completely GDPR compliant to ensure student privacy and meets all other legal requirements. We are used by both government and privately funded schools and institutions who have completed their own independent due diligence on our company. We have built our system on scalable globally distributed infrastructure to ensure it is robust and designed it to run on low bandwidth connections to ensure reliable access for everyone.
We want to tackle the inherent gender and socioeconomic inequalities by creating a system which bipasses a lot of the barriers which are in place to present equal equity and access to education for everyone. We want to ensure that learning is not restricted to classrooms or students who can attend class whether this is for economic reasons or because, as is so often the case, because girls don’t have access to period related products etc.
