About
In an era where Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly pervasive, from homes to workplaces, the need for applications that are fair, unbiased, and trusted is critical. AI4Gov advances trustworthy AI for transparent public governance while fostering democratic values. It addresses ethical concerns, trust, discrimination, and bias issues associated with AI and Big Data by developing frameworks and tools to support policymakers with automated, evidence-based decision-making.
What is the problem the project is addressing?
The growing use of AI in public governance raises concerns about bias, discrimination, and lack of transparency, which undermine trust in democratic institutions. Policymakers and public institutions often lack tools to ensure AI that aligns with democratic values and fundamental rights. With generative AI technologies advancing rapidly, it is urgent to address these issues and mitigate the negative impacts of AI on public processes.
How is it solving the problem?
AI4Gov develops frameworks and tools to enable policymakers to make informed, evidence-based decisions. The project focuses on creating methodologies to identify and address bias, ensure fairness, and uphold transparency in AI systems. Collaboration among policymakers, legal experts, social scientists, and AI specialists ensures a comprehensive approach. AI4Gov will validate the developments in 3 pilot cases in 3 different sectors, ensuring that the solutions effectively address the ethical and societal challenges.
Expected Tangible results
AI4Gov will deliver several key outcomes to ensure the ethical and democratic use of AI:
- A reference framework for regulating AI and Big Data in line with democratic values and ethical standards.
- Tools for monitoring fairness and mitigating bias in AI systems.
- Trusted AI techniques to explain decision-making processes to policymakers and stakeholders.
- Training programs (such as MOOCs) to educate stakeholders and citizens on Democratic AI principles.
- Improved regulatory compliance with frameworks like the GDPR and EU AI Act, supporting AI in democratic processes.
