Global Network of AI Excellence Centers in AI and Sustainable Development

The focus of this initiative is to establish the IRCAI Network as a virtual centre of excellence for research, innovation, and expertise, aiming to become a global reference in AI and capable of attracting investments and the best talents in the field.

IRCAI aims to create a bridge with researchers in the Global South and promote both European values in AI, guided by EU regulations (Human-Centric and Trustworthy AI) and AI tools in education, including language and content.

The sustainability and ethical responsibility of AI systems in education in Europe will be encouraged and expanded to Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Asia. This network is expected to mobilise researchers in these regions to collaborate on key AI research challenges, enabling faster progress through collective efforts rather than working in isolation, thereby avoiding fragmentation and duplication of efforts. Such networks are essential to achieving critical mass and overcoming the current fragmentation of AI research on SDGs worldwide.

This virtual centre could be built on key pillars, each representing an existing network of excellence centres specialising in a given topic. UNESCO, through IRCAI, has the potential to become a global champion in AI and SDGs, including the ethical aspects of technology deployment.
